About Bryan Wakefield
I received my Ph. D. under the direction of Dr. Peter Wipf at the University of Pittsburgh. My research focused on solid phase cuprate mediated ring opening of aziridines, the total synthesis of thio-halenaquinone and medicinal chemistry. I then moved to the lab of Lanny Liebeskind at Emory University for my Post-Doc. There I worked on the addition of stabilized nucleophiles to cyclohexenyl Mo-scaffolds. Upon completing my time at Emory, I spent a semester teaching at Georgia Perimeter College, Newton Campus. Starting in August 2010, I became an Assistant Professor at Delaware State University. During my time at DSU, I taught classes at the graduate and undergraduate level with a load to 7-9 contact hours a semester. While teaching, I started my independent research group focus on total synthesis of biologically active natural products and new organic materials. In the Fall of 2012, I moved to Coastal Carolina University to continue my research and work with students. My lab here has focused on the synthesis of biologically interesting natural products and their analogues. During my time at CCU, I have helped the university secure over $1,000,000 in funding to support my research and to improve the biomedical research infrastructure on campus. I have helped manage the CCU INBRE program as either the head of the Summer Coastal Research Experience (SCORE) from 2015-2020 or as the PI of the program since 2020. This program provides students and faculty funds for summer research. During the summer, I plan professional development seminars, trips to graduate programs and the end of summer poster session. During the academic year, I manage a seminar series which exposes our students to biomedical research that is occurring both on and off campus. I also work closely with colleagues across the INBRE departments, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology, to support their research needs. I have helped write proposal for instrumentation and worked to faciliate the purchase or donation of equipment such as a $100,000 microscopy system and a 500 MHz NMR. I have done this while maintaining an active research group and teaching a 4/3 load of introductory and upper level organic course.Specialties: Organic synthesis including methods development, total synthesis, diversity oriented synthesis and medicinal chemistry.
