Chief Product Officer
sensemetrics is a leading Industrial IoT monitoring platform, providing sensor connectivity and analytics to the Mining and Infrastructure sectors. At sensemetrics, we developed revolutionary hardware and software that allow best-in-class field to office workflows; as well as developer tools and infrastructure that empower connection between sensor manufacturers, engineers and operators, and third party software and analytics applications. sensemetrics was acquired by Bentley Systems in April of 2021.At sensemetrics, I was responsible for the strategy and delivery of all products and services offered by the company. My role was to oversee our Product, Engineering/Dev, and Marketing teams: to discover new markets and product opportunities, build products and features to suit, and then bring them to market. On the heels of our Series A investment, we grew the Engineering team 4x, tripled the size of our Product team, and built a new Marketing team from scratch. As we were scaling up our team and our business, we built new tools that allowed us to speed up the pace of new product development considerably, allowing us to ship new integrations and products faster to meet revenue goals. We made significant advancements in our hardware program, doubling our hardware gross margin, and moving to a Designed For Manufacture (DFM) product offering that allowed us to move our hardware and accessory catalog from internal assembly to contract manufacture. On the software team, improvements to our architecture and code base allowed us to scale faster, and build new features and integrations at an incredibly rapid pace to meet customer demand.
Vice President Of Operations
As the VP of Ops, my job was to build our Operations, Customer Success, Support and Product teams. During this time, we worked hard to scale and streamline our daily operations, support and train our increasing customer base, train new customers and employees, and ensure that all of our customers had a successful experience. While in this role, we created a Customer Success team, increased the size of our Support team, and created the daily processes and tools to make these teams successful as they scaled. Our ops team and product teams worked to grow our supply chain and improve our manufacturing and delivery process. All of these teams worked together, along with our Sales and Engineering teams, to ensure on-time and successful product and project delivery for our customers.
Principal, Engineered Solutions
As we founded the company, a lot of our initial work required us to be "utility players", performing the work of several traditional departments with smaller, agile teams. In this role, I was responsible for the design of customer solutions, utilizing the sensemetrics platform to create high value automated sensor networks. My team engaged customers as Sales Engineers to provide feedback on needs and requirements, and interfaced with internal and external development teams to deliver successful products and programs. As our company began to establish initial product/market fit, my group:- Managed quality and expectations for both customers and internal teams- Performed new customer setup and new user training- Engaged in onsite field integration, support and training with customer teams- Delivered post-sale supportAdditionally, I worked with our sales team to drive innovation on the sensemetrics platform by assessing and defining new business opportunities, markets, and products.
Principal - Communications
Foundry Engineering was a B2B engineering services startup in the remote monitoring & IIoT space for Mining and Infrastructure clients. After a three year run, members of the founding team at Foundry, along with some new talent, started sensemetrics Inc. to address the remote monitoring market with products rather than services. At Foundry, we designed, sold, and implemented advanced geomatics and geotechnical monitoring systems, wireless and wireline communication systems, sensor telemetry, and data visualization. Additionally, we built our own industry leading in-house visualization software product, DataForge, which allowed clients to aggregate and overlay sensor data on a digital representation of their project. With this tool, and the sensor networks that we designed and built, we were able to help clients protect their workers and physical assets from the potential impacts of things such as construction activities, excavations, or weather.
Network Operations Supervisor
Golden State Cellular was a privately held Cellular Carrier in Northern California, with minority ownership by Verizon. The company was fully acquired by Verizon in May of 2013.As the Network Operations Supervisor, I was responsible for all aspects of the company's cellular network. My role was to oversee design, budgeting, construction, and maintenance of all cellular sites and switching infrastructure in a 5 county area with heavy tourism, containing Yosemite national park among other attractions. While in this role, we underwent rapid infrastructure expansion as mobile users first began to enjoy the benefits of the mobile internet, delivered over high speed wireless, to their personal smartphones. Watching and participating in this sea change, as the way that people used and relied upon their mobile devices shifted, was an incredible learning experience. Keeping up with this dynamic environment in real time created significant planning and execution challenges for us to overcome, but we met these challenges, and created over 300% revenue growth among our data products in under a year.
Network Technician
As a network technician, I was one of a team responsible for building and maintaining our technical infrastructure and cellular service. We maintained a Central Office for our network with all of the central switching & communications infrastructure (the "Brain" of a cellular network). Additionally, we built, expanded, and maintained the cellular sites & tower infrastructure required to deliver service to 5 counties in the Central Sierras, including the busy Yosemite National Park. While in this role, our team expanded our network and our offering at a breathtaking pace. With a 10 person engineering and operations team, we tripled our number of site locations in 3 years, maintaining an average of two new sites developed per month. During this time, I had the pleasure of being the project manager and field team leader for:- Countless site infrastructure upgrades for site optimization, increased capacity, new technology, etc.- Design and build of many new greenfield and brownfield cell sites- Multiple communications backbone installations and upgrades, spanning thousands of miles and 5 counties.- Multiple Central Office and core technology installations and upgrades- Development of multiple new processes and organizational improvements for design, on-call, dispatch, maintenance, QA/QC, testing, documentation, organization, inventory, logistics, budgeting, and construction
Internet Sales Manager
Hammond Ford was a family owned new & used auto dealership in Northern California. The company was acquired by a new private owner in 2008. At Hammond, I was responsible for building and managing the company's first Internet Sales department, car sales website, and SEO program. Working with the owner & management team, my job was to define and execute strategies and marketing plans for internet sales of new and pre-owned vehicles. As a management team, we rebranded the company; and relaunched the dealership’s marketing presence to focus on our company strengths of honesty, integrity, and small-town reputation capital (“Building relationships one car at a time”). Alongside of this effort, we created a seamless purchase program that coordinated internet marketing and lead generation with physical delivery and sales process. As a direct result of these activities, we were able to build a friendly, non-confrontational sales process that created happy, repeat customers; as well as increasing customer trust in our brand.
Sales And Support Manager
Symmetric Software built AuctionRPM, the world’s first windows-based Auction Management Software. At Symmetric, I was responsible for creation and daily operation of the sales and support functions, which provided the new experience of working at an early stage B2B software startup. As the company's first hire, I had the opportunity to create many initial company processes, tools, and infrastructure. In our first two years, with our founding team, I had the pleasure of:- Establishing our initial product packaging and pricing, and GTM approach- Creating our initial branding, graphic design, ad copy, manuals, quickstart guides, help & technical docs- Staying heavily engaged in new feature ideation, UX design & ongoing refinement- Collection and presentation of customer feedback, acting as the “voice of the customer”
