I'm the Game Design Director for Magic: the Gathering! I partner with Aaron Forsythe to oversee the full range of our sets and products. Our incredible design team designs all things gameplay, from the very beginning of Exploratory Design to the very end of Play Design, from competitive format design to cards for the most casual Commander players.As a leader, I focus on people first: if designers are autonomous, thoughtful, aligned, and happy, the rest will follow. I see my role as weaving together the wide variety of viewpoints and perspectives in the group, helping them see the threads, and help empower individuals to turn their nebulous thoughts into an awesome future. I believe process should be (and for us, is) built around our people. We focus on a mix of generalists and specialists, balancing our teams to support each other, and building structure when it's helpful and empowering individuals when structure would only slow them down.I started out at Wizards on Kaijudo TCG back in 2013, focused on final design. I transitioned over to Magic shortly thereafter, and have worn many hats over the years. Final designer, Play Designer, lead designer, manager, and now director. My focus has always been on the philosophy and theory underlying design, and collaborating with others to seek truth and figure out tricky puzzles.
