My clinical research program used a biopsychosocial approach to understand and treat addictive behaviors, cigarette smoking/nicotine use specifically. Expertise and peer-reviewed publications span a wide range of methodologies, including: survey development, systematic reviews/meta-analysis, laboratory studies, randomized controlled trials, population-based surveillance, and policy evaluation. Continuous research funding since 2012, with gratitude for support provided by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Cancer Institute (NCI), American Cancer Society (ACS), as well as institutional and philanthropic funders. Funding has contributed to development of the first just-in-time adaptive intervention that can automatically detect triggers for smoking relapse and respond with real-time treatment delivery. Ubiquitous smartphone ownership, passive data collection, AI/machine learning are leveraged via mobile app to inform behavioral health algorithms designed to ease patient/provider burden and simplify healthcare delivery, increase treatment adherence, improve health outcomes, and optimize equity. Additional interests include: 1) identification of biobehavioral mechanisms that undergird addictive behaviors (e.g., emotion regulation, self-control, stress)2) development of relapse prevention interventions (e.g., just-in-time interventions, mHealth)3) use of behavioral economics to inform tobacco/nicotine control policies (e.g., product demand, electronic cigarette/vaping device)
