Dr. Julia Bryan is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to this, Dr. Bryan was an Assistant Professor at both the University of Maryland at College Park and the College of William and Mary. Dr. Bryan conducts extensive research on school-family-community partnerships and the role of school counselors and other school personnel in building partnerships. Her work is based on the belief that strong partnerships enhance students’ educational resilience and academic achievement, promote social and academic supports for children, and provide opportunities and resources that help empower vulnerable children and families, especially in urban schools and communities. Dr. Bryan also conducts research on the role of school counselors, teachers, and education leaders in addressing critical challenges that face children of color such as college access; disproportionate disciplinary referrals, suspensions and expulsions; school bonding and connectedness; and educational resilience. She presents nationally and writes extensively on these topics. To date, Dr. Bryan has published numerous articles in national peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Counseling and Development, Counselor Education and Supervision, and Professional School Counseling. In addition, she has edited a special issue of the Professional School Counseling journal, entitled Collaboration and Partnerships with Families and Communities in the School Counseling Context.
