Consultant - E-Billing For Law Firms And Law Departments
CurrentSince becoming an independent e-billing consultant I have completed many successful assignments - including assisting an off-shore law firm in defining an appropriate e-billing strategy; working for UK /international firms on their e-billing projects and recently advised two major law firms on their near-shore global e-billing team implementations. I have also advised corporate legal departments and Legal Operations on their spend management solutions. As an experienced consultant I have written and spoken widely on all aspects of e-billing, including articles in the Law Gazette, Managing Partner and Computers & Law magazines; have run masterclasses and seminars on UK/EU e-billing concerns and was a speaker at the ACL Manchester conference. From 2010 I advised the Association of Cost Lawyers Jackson working group on how the standards and technology used in commercial e-billing could be introduced into civil litigation costs management. A further group (the Hutton Committee) defined a set of UTBMS phase/task and activity codes for civil litigation matters in England and Wales (the J-Codes) and produced a new format bill of costs (Precedent S). As a Committee member I was heavily involved in this group's activities. These, and other related reforms, are fundamental to the way that legal costs will be budgeted, managed and assessed in the future.More recently I have been involved in new solutions for clients and law firms, enabling them to share budget and legal cost information while the work is ongoing i.e. in the pre-billing phases of each matter. These offer much more visible collaboration in terms of shared financial and operational data in a secure environment. This can be in real-time, or at more extended time periods, depending on the client requirements. I call this approach "beyond e-billing" and major clients are now asking their external law firms to provide this level of costs, WIP, staffing resources and expenses detail in a more timely fashion.
