Dr. Porter received his bachelor’s degree with honors in psychology from Virginia Tech in 1990. He received his master’s of science in psychology and doctorate of philosophy in experimental psychology degrees from The University of Memphis in 1994 and 1996, respectively. Currently, he is associate dean of the graduate school and professor of psychology at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His area of emphasis is behavioral community psychology, focusing on community problems and psychology’s role in solving those problems. He has studied techniques for increasing driver safety, pedestrian safety, fire safety, and environmental action. He is a member of the International Association of Applied Psychology, for which he is the president of Division 13 (Traffic and Transportation Psychology). He is past co-editor-in-chief of Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour and editor of the Handbook of Traffic Psychology. Porter, as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or research mentor, has received more than $6 million in research grants for mostly research and evaluation activities in traffic safety and psychology. He has worked to establish community partnerships in these endeavors. These partners have included media, engineering, and enforcement agencies. The media regularly call on Porter to be an expert interviewee for various traffic safety issues. He has also assisted in Virginia public policy debates over traffic safety initiatives. Dr. Porter has a wide teaching portolio, ranging from statistics and methodology courses to content areas such as community, historical, and social psychology.
