Profile bio

About Bryan Reynolds, Phd

I am passionate about using data and scientific methods to answer complex questions, and I aspire to use insights from data to make a positive impact on society. The skills that I have acquired throughout my professional career as a scientist have provided me with a strong foundation to work towards achieving this goal through data science and analytics, but I am constantly looking to improve, refine, and build on my technical skills. I strive to never stop learning and aim to grow by continuing to tackle new challenges.Skills: Scientific Research, Software Development (Python, C++, Bash, ROOT), Genetic Algorithms, Experimental Design, Hypothesis Testing, Statistical Analysis, Machine Learning (Neural Networks, Regression and Classification Algorithms like k-NN, Linear/Logistic Regression, Random Forest, etc.), Data Cleaning & Validation, Distributed Computing, Data Visualization, Teamwork & CollaborationBackground:I have a PhD in physics from the Ohio State University, where I specialized in experimental high energy physics. My research was conducted as a member of the ATLAS Collaboration, one of the experiments based at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) located at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. My research focused on analysis of the ATLAS jet trigger system, where I used statistical analysis and regression techniques to study jet trigger efficiency, helping to ensure the quality of the data collected by the ATLAS detector. This analysis quantified the effects of varying experimental conditions and calibration schemes, identifying inefficiencies and avenues for improvement for future data collection. Additionally, I worked as part of an analysis team searching for signs of new physics processes using novel analysis techniques to probe energy ranges that were previously untested due to computing limitations. My responsibilities included processing raw datasets using a high performance computing grid, cleaning and validating data, and developing algorithms for hypothesis testing. Most recently, I've worked with the GENETIS Collaboration through Ohio State University, using genetic algorithms to design optimized hardware for physics experiments. The common threads running through my professional experiences are the development and use of software and statistical techniques to draw conclusions from complex data while working in highly collaborative environments. I thrive when facing difficult challenges while working alongside and learning from a team of other gifted thinkers, and I look forward to continuing to do so.
