About Bryan Rill, Phd

I am interested in helping teams and organizations thrive, creating innovative products, services, and cultures. As a generalist, I leverage a background that spans anthropology, psychology, design thinking, and leadership to drive innovation - which often lies at the boundaries between disciplines. In practice, I serve organizations in a few core capacities. The focus of most of my work is building and leading research operations that deliver insights to drive improvements to the product and customer experience. I teach product teams how to understand end-users, identify their unmet needs, and inform design parameters. The goal is often to embed human-centered design practices throughout the organization, ensuring that the design and development process is informed by the voice of the customer. As a creative catalyst, I design and facilitate co-creative programs, from design thinking workshops to culture change initiatives. I support peak performance and creative breakthroughs through culture and team-building practices that empower and enable participants. As a coach, I help people tap into and unleash their inherent creative potentials. My coaching practices derive from many years' study of human potential and transformation. I have trained with monks in Japan, Fortune 500 executive coaches, and leaders of wisdom traditions. From these experiences, I have developed a unique toolkit to facilitate personal and professional growth.I am also fortunate enough to be able to transfer what I have learned to the next generation. I teach design courses for UCSD, from design research to interaction design and prototyping. Website: www.rillinsights.com Background: After receiving a PhD in cultural anthropology in 2011, I moved into design education, leading the Applied Design Psychology stream for the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. I also founded and directed the Co-Creation Initiative, a research program that explored how to build innovative ecosystems. This research led to the publication of “The Art of Co-Creation: A Guidebook for Practitioners.” The text is a user guide to designing for and facilitating collective intelligence. These human-centered, co-design methods serve as the foundation for how I approach design practices and program building. In 2016 I transitioned to industry, and have since been serving organizations of all sizes. In each step of my career journey, I have built or improved upon programs, holding to a high standard of integrity.
