  • Interface Performance Materials, Inc.
    Research Scientist
    Interface Performance Materials, Inc. 2013 - 2016
    Lancaster, Pa, Us
Interface Performance Materials utilizes the paper-making process to manufacture advanced fiber-reinforced composite materials. Interface utilizes both cellulosic and synthetic fibers as well as a wide variety of chemicals and minerals commonly (and not so commonly) used in the paper industry. Interface also has coating capabilities.Developed new fiber-based composite material products for manufacture on paper machines:* Designed and executed experiments to develop the technology described in US Patent 2016/0101590 - "Composite Sheet with Embedded Mesh Layer". * Developed a lower-cost water-repellent coating for application onto un-saturated roof underlayment basestock. (Repellent under simulated rainfall for at least 4 hours - the industry's standard.)* Improved the formulation of a high-temperature inorganic adhesive (for bonding insulation to metal) so that it would be insoluble in boiling water. Designed a test method to quantitatively compare bonding strengths before and after the boiling of test samples.* Directed multiple regression statistical analyses (conducted via Minitab) to facilitate the early identification of the experimental variables which would be most effective towards improving the compression stability of gasket materials.Scope of general responsibilities:- Formulation design for experimental uncoated substrates, coatings, and adhesives.- Production of prototypes.- Equipment design and assembly to facilitate production of unusual prototypes.- Design and construction of preliminary test methods.- Assistance with pilot paper machine operations- Preparations for production trials at our New York facilities for new products.- Evaluation of production trial findings and data - with special attention to the observations and feedback from production operators and local technical staff.
  • Glatfelter
    Senior Business Analyst
    Glatfelter 2003 - 2012
    Charlotte, North Carolina, Us
Evaluated the economic impact of potential or proposed changes to manufacturing processes and/or to the product portfolio: - CapEx: Financial evaluation (annual cash flows, NPV, IRR, DCF payback time) of approximately 25% (or about $5 million / year) of the facility's proposed Capital Expenditure projects. Also enhanced the methodology for the monetary valuation of any potential risk mitigation benefits of proposed CapEx projects.- Capacity Utilization: To guide decisions regarding capacity utilization, constructed ad hoc Excel-based decision-support models in co-operation with fellow senior business analysts.- Product Portfolio Management: As a critical tool to guide upper management in product portfolio decisions, developed customized Excel-based product margin ranking reports which were based upon the incremental costs specific to different time horizons (e.g multi-month, weekly, etc) and accounted for unique opportunity costs. - Pricing Strategy: Persuaded upper management to raise the price of a mature semi-commodity product by comparing its {relatively flat} multi-year pricing history to the multi-year upward trend of its corresponding Producer Price Index benchmark.- Hidden Costs: To identify hidden product costs, designed a statistical model of the stochastic fluctuations in cumulative demand for softwood and hardwood pulps across 5 paper machines to better predict which products would have the highest probability of depleting the mill's inventory of its cheapest fiber sources - its "pulped-on-site" pulps. The identified products were then assessed a greater share of the mill's overall expense for purchased pulp.- Annually diagnosed the major drivers of year-vs-year changes to standard product costs.- Audited the performance metrics of various Continuous Improvement projects on a monthly basis.
  • Glatfelter
    Senior Product Engineer
    Glatfelter Apr 2002 - 2003
    Charlotte, North Carolina, Us
    - Troubleshooting of various product quality problems for a coated product intended for offset-lithography printing.- Led production trials at Glatfelter's Wisconsin facility to extend the company's non-woven product line to new customers requiring different specifications.Promoted to Senior Business Analyst in 2003.
  • Akzonobel
    Senior Tech Service Chemist
    Akzonobel Nov 2000 - Apr 2002
    Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Nl

  • Crown Vantage
    New Product Development Specialist
    Crown Vantage Apr 1997 - Oct 2000
{This facility closed in October, 2000 - shortly after the company went bankrupt.}As a project manager, led the development of various paper products which were new to that particular manufacturing facility. The end use markets of those products included food packaging, "moldable" label facing papers, and wallcoverings. - Developed a washable high opacity latex-saturated coated wallpaper grade [for gravure printing] and developed a variety of latex-saturated wallpaper base-stock grades which collectively represented 15 to 20% of North American market share.- Developed a coated paper label substrate for frozen pizza [for offset litho printing] which had enough "freeze-thaw" dimensional stability to rival the performance of the incumbant polyethylene-extruded sheet (at the same cost to the customer).
