RealSource Data Inc is a list broker. They supply names, addresses, emails, device ids, etc. I was brought on board to tame an unruly data warehouse (DW), automate processes, and overall bring order. Highlights • Data Warehouse Rebuild (MS Sequel Server 2017) - The DW contained multiple types of consumer/owner data (Auto, Property, etc). Each tables contained 10s to 100s of millions of records. After years of ad-hoc updates they were due some TLC. I rebuilt all databases in the DW correcting data types and standardizing field names. Where appropriate normalized the data and added indexes. All data was pulled, re-hygiene, and re-loaded. Simple MDM was done to link the various list data sources with person information. • Data Pipelines Rebuild (RedPoint Datamanager) – The rebuilding of the DW necessitated rebuilding the data pipelines. Every file from every vendor, every file to every client, every append, and every report had to be reworked. RealSource uses RedPoint Data Management to run it’s data pipelines. I reconstructed every data pipeline from scratch using the data types, schemas, and hygiene steps expected by the DW. Before I started it required one person working more than 40 hours per week to perform all of the regularly schedule processes. By the time I was done, it took no more than 20 hours per week. • Mobile Device Location Data Load (C#, MS SQL Server 2017) – Originally a Java application BCP’d vendor files directly into tables of VARCHAR fields. It started to struggle when the daily record count got around 3 billion and so I took action. First, I modified the database to use correct data types, normalized the data, and worked out a deduplication procedure. Second, I wrote a Multi-Threaded C# Console Application that ran once a day. It downloaded 10,000+ compressed files from the vendor. It streamed records directly from the compressed files splitting them based on the device marketing id.
