Lead DeveloperKrishnamurthy Lab Oct 2024 - PresentCalgary, Alberta, CanadaAfter finishing a full-time contract role in the Krishnamurthy Lab this summer, sponsored by an Alberta Innovates SRS grant, I am pleased to continue working with Dr. Ashok Krishnamurthy as lead developer for the innovative research and teaching software developed in our lab. This contract focuses on further developing CougarStats, an online statistical calculator which assists students in solving statistics homework problems for a variety of topics they learn throughout their academic semester.Previously I worked on novel research software, completely re-engineering two different R Shiny web applications for studying the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases (primarily using compartmental models).I'm pleased to continue working with R. It's my favourite programming language! What was your favourite software development role? What did you learn that changed the way your practice software development?

Lead DeveloperKrishnamurthy Lab May 2024 - Sep 2024Calgary, Alberta, Canada• Developed an interactive, R Shiny application for prototyping the use of various parameter estimation algorithms applied to compartmental models of epidemics• Refactored an interactive R Shiny application, reducing complexity to 1/3 of its previous estimation, and simplifying code by 600 lines with no loss of function, and with 5 new features, re-modularizing application into nine logically and scientifically consistent files, while also reducing total line count(including comments) to 1400 from 2200 while vastly increasing the amount of helpful commentary• Refactored a separate, spatial epidemic data analysis application with similar effectiveness• Planned, designed, and implemented new features requested by supervising statistician• Documented software architecture for future developer on-boarding• Mentored 2 junior software developers in R programming and data analysis, assisting with numerous merges and reviewed all pull requests for 1 month before permitting direct repository access• Coordinated development efforts to meet project deadlines (demo of applications at a provincial mathematics & statistics conference, and an international epidemiology conference)

Research AssistantMount Royal University May 2019 - Aug 2021Calgary, Alberta, Canada2019:1. Performed sample collection of fish, Brook Stickleback (Culaea inconstans), from two Albertan lakes, cataloguing collected samples.2. Extracted genomic DNA following a modified QIAGEN DNeasy Blood & Tissue protocol, quantifying extractions with spectrophotometry and fluorometry using a ThermoFisher NanoDrop and Qubit.2019–2021:1. Scripted individual-based population genetics simulations of local adaptation using the SLiM evolutionary simulation framework.2. Used Compute Canada’s Cedar and Graham supercomputers to run embarrassingly parallel data pipelines in the R statistical programming language, aggregating approximately 160 GB of mutation data to custom SQLite3 database for downstream visualization work-flows.3. Used R Shiny reactive programming platform to visualize genetic linkage between antagonistically pleiotropic adaptive traits and conditionally deleterious mutations in the evolutionary model of local adaptation, suitable for both data exploration during manuscript preparation and reproducible data visualization post-publication. A manuscript is forthcoming.4. Used R Markdown to create scholastic reports, presentations, and essays using and basic CSS and JavaScript to format mathematical formulae, dynamic data tables, and rich presentations. A lengthy, literate programming paradigm manuscript explaining the algorithms, justifying parameters, and providing background information on population genetics simulations is forthcoming.
