About Bryce Nielson
I have always loved the outdoors. I grew up in Northern California where I could see the wonders of nature in the Sierra Nevada mountains, local lakes and streams, Redwood forests and the coasts of the Pacific. However, I did not really consider studying Biology until High School. After taking an extensive and in depth Biology course I realized that I could combine my love for understanding the complexities of living things with a study of them. After much experience in research I found my interests to be best aligned with Microbiology, specifically research on disease and public boundaries to implement treatments. However, research into biofuel production is also a passion of mine as I have worked with methane production from cow manure. In college I have realized the importance of coding and statistics in biology and I have taken action to implement those topics into my own personal skill set. I have plans to grow and expand these skills but currently I have experience with coding in C++, Python and MatLab, as well as analyzing data in R. I had the opportunity to serve a two year service mission in Ecuador. I went down to Ecuador knowing the bare minimum of the Spanish Language. Within three months I felt comfortable holding a conversation with a native speaker and since then I have become a better speaker with a more extensive vocabulary and a greater mastery of the language. In order to keep my Spanish fresh, I decided to have a secondary major in Spanish Studies.I have experience in other fields as well. I have worked in customer service, construction and museum specimen preparation before. Customer service taught me how problem solve and work well with others. Construction taught me how to be resourceful and think outside the box. Working in a museum taught me how to be careful and precise. I believe these skills will help me in any type of future employment but the greater help will be how I have learned to be versatile and adapt. This variety of employment has helped me to pick up and learn new skills quickly.I have a wide range of interests and a wide range of skills that can seem quite different from each other but thats who I am. I like to keep my options open and develop skills that can seem unique and unrelated but have a lot in common under the surface. That is why I am studying both science and the humanities. That is why I have worked a variety of different jobs. That is what I like to do.
