The GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) Foundation was created with the vision to drive innovation in digital technology to reduce inequalities in our world. As a Market Engagement Manager in the Connected Society division, I focus on bridging the digital divide by improving mobile internet access to underserved populations in Africa and Asia through commercially sustainable, socially impactful partnerships. I am currently focused on improving digital literacy and previously provided technical support on the Mobile Coverage Maps project. I lead the divisions’ work on the Mobile Internet Skills Training Toolkit (MISTT), collaborate on digital skills research, and provide technical assistance to EdTech grantees taking part in the Usage Innovation Fund. My work focuses on getting first-time internet users online via mobile, how to use the internet safely, increasing women’s access to the internet, and improving accessibility for persons with disability. Key to all my work is engaging Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to better reach marginalised groups, primarily in rural areas. I co-lead training rollouts with partners by providing strategic advice and insights, which has lead to over 18 million people trained. Partners include MTN, Orange, Google, Facebook, Wikimedia Foundation, and more.Previously, I provided research and data analysis on mobile coverage in rural Sub-Saharan Africa for a seven-country report that is part of the World Bank’s Digital Economy for Africa initiative. Specifically, I used Python and QGIS to identify possible cell tower sites to expand mobile coverage and maximise social impact. I did this by simulating propagation scenarios and creating policy models. The findings were used to advocate for progressive regulation and access to finance for mobile operators to invest in rural areas. Show less
