About Paul Bryce
I was born in a small town in Scotland to a family tree of ship builders and coal miners. My siblings and I are first-generation academics due to the support of our parents and a work ethic that meant our grocery store stayed open 7 days a week and that Xmas morning was just another day if the newpapers were printing. Both my siblings are now lawyers but I chose science because...well, I don't actually remember why...but it changed my life! I was still in high school when I met Nobel laureate pharmacologist SirJames Black at Holyrood Palace while getting the gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and it seeded the idea that I could change lives through science. My BSc and PhD led to a move to Harvard Medical School for postdoc where, in a "eureka" experience, I worked side by side with clinicians for the first time. 6 years, 14 publications, a fellowship grant and a promotion to instructor later, I leapt at the chance to join the faculty at Northwestern University and build my own program. As faculty in The Department of Medicine at Feinberg Medical School, there wasn't many PhDs but plenty of like-minded peers, and an overwhelming translational focus to research-- it was home! By 2017, the milestones were checked off--publications, grants, mentoring, leadership--- except one: making a drug like Sir James had done! So, I followed up on the call from Sanofi about joining them to lead Type 2 Inflammation & Fibrosis research and a few months later was leading the building of a new therapeutic area, with its pipeline, collaborations, and operational/strategic vision all needing my contributions. In the next 5 years, I delivered everything that was expected AND more-- I was scored "High Performer" in 3 of those years, reflecting going above expectations in the "How" or "What" of the role. By 2022, when an old colleague reached out to see if I could be recruited to a small biotech she had joined, two programs had already passed to clinical development and I felt sure that what I had built would keep delivering even without me. ImmuneID was fun...a small team vibe with an academic flavor that was like smelling Mums kitchen again for me...but it didnt work out, like so many biotech companies in 2022/23.2023 became a year about me-- my personal and professional vision planning. I took some time off to focus on my woodworking hobby and build some things I couldn't do before. I trained in areas important to my soul-- DEI, data skills, research operations-- which I am now utilizing fully at UMass Lowell.

As a faculty member in the Department of Medicine (Division of Allergy & Immunology), I successfully created and sustained a highly productive, well-funded research laboratory and contributed significant service to the Medical School, Graduate School, and Deans Office, in addition to national and international societies. My contributions led to the award of Tenure in 2015 and promotion to Associate Professor.Our research focused on understanding the contributions of tissue-resident granulocytes, particularly focused around mast cells, in the balance of health versus disease and with a strong translational application into allergic diseases. We utilized clinical and preclinical approaches, including novel humanized immune system models and transgenic approaches.Some of my proudest moments include: --Over $7,000,000 direct funding over 10 years.--Directly mentored 5 PhD students, 8 PhD postdocs (industry & academia), 4 clinical fellows, and 2 junior faculty, served on >20 thesis committees and served as chair on 3. --Director of “Advanced Immunology” course for Driskill Graduate School PhD program from 2009-2017.--One of 10 faculty selected by the Deans Office to serve on the Core Service Funding Committee, over-seeing funding decisions for Feinberg Medical School core programs (2010-2014).
