I taught Wildlife-habitat relationships, an upper division required course for the graduating seniors in the WFCB department, and co-taught the affiliated lab as well as WLE 250 (affectionately known as May Term), the intensive field-course for sophomore wildlife students. It was a privilege to work with these dedicated and enthusiastic students and to learn from my phenomenal fellow teachers. During this period I also served as an academic advisor to students at all points of their degree, and was able to participate in the Graduate Teaching Academy hosted by the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at UMO.
Graduate Research Assistant - Phd
It was an honor to work with Dr. Alessio Mortelliti and the Maine DIF&W on a collaborative, large-scale camera trapping research project for my dissertation. We focused on assessing the effectiveness of using cameras for long-term monitoring objectives, especially for American marten and fisher. From our pilot season beginning in winter 2017, to our last summer of surveys in 2020, we collected over 1 million images, and have produced 4 peer-reviewed publications to date! Graduate Research Assistant - Ms
I completed my MS degree in Wildlife Ecology, focusing on the recovery of semi-aquatic mammals (beaver, mink, muskrat and river otter) in the heavily modified St Louis Estuary (an EPA designated area of concern). By using both trail cameras and small plane surveys, we generated data for occupancy models to compare the status of these four species within the AOC to two other, less disturbed aquatic systems in Wisconsin and Minnesota.The project was a collaborative endeavor with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center, the National Park Service, and is funded by the EPA.Advisors: Dr. Tim Van Deelen (UW-Madison) and Dr. Shawn Crimmins (UW-Stevens Point)Committee: Dr. Nathan Roberts (WDNR) and Dr. Ben Zuckerberg (UW-Madison)
Scientific Aide
I worked as a Scientific Aide in the Wildlife Branch for four engaging, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable years. I was primarily conducting field research on Black-tailed deer and mountain lions in the Mendocino National Forest, in the coastal range of California. I joined the project as a volunteer my first summer out of college and came back annually as the project grew in complexity and I could take on more responsibilities. I served as the crew leader during the last intensive summer field season, trained and supervised technicians in the capture of neonatal fawns, telemetry, killsite analysis, remote camera deployment and scat grids, and assumed responsibility for continued monitoring into the fall and winter. During winters I assisted the mountain lion field work and performed aerial telemetry for the Mendocino project, as well as performing multiple tasks for the Wildlife Branch of CDFW in Sacramento. This included running special drawing wild pig hunts; organizing supplies, collaborators, and field work for Tule elk capture and translocation efforts; conducting black bear research during spring/summer 2014; and miscellaneous duties such as data management, equipment procurement, vehicle maintenance, and networking.
Technician
I worked as an aerial telemetry and motion triggered camera field technician for the UC Berkeley SNAMP project, a continuous monitoring effort for fisher populations in the southern Sierra Nevada. I was here to temporarily fill reduced hours at CDFW, before returning full time to my Sci Aide position in December 2013.
Intern
I assisted ongoing research on the King's River Fisher Project. As an intern I was trained to trap, collar, and track (via radio telemetry) Pacific fishers. I worked with scat detection dogs, operated snow tracked ATVs, and helped build and maintain equipment.
