Texas After Violence Project is a community-based documentary project cultivating deeper understandings of the impacts of interpersonal and state-sanctioned violence on individuals, families, and communities. Our mission is to conduct participatory research and build an archive of stories and other materials that serve as resources for community dialogue and culture change. Our vision is to prevent future violence, promote restorative nonviolent responses when violence occurs, and cultivate community well-being and transformative justice.

Austin, Texas Area

Taught twelve to fourteen year olds from low-income families in the Austin area. Offered lessons on college preparation, growth mindset, anti-bullying, goal setting, and career exploration. Helped prepare and implement orientation and graduation for over 500 students.

San Quentin, Ca

Help run a 25-person class of incarcerated men preparing for the GED and train incarcerated teachers. Teach traditional GED material but also collaborate with incarcerated instructors to find readings that inspire discussions on racism, school-to-prison pipeline, and culturally relevant fiction. Teach full classes and facilitate small group discussions. Shape curriculum and student progress assessments.

Berkeley, Ca

Help support the administrative needs of the non-profit, which offers educational opportunities and mentorship to disadvantaged youth. Create curriculum for and teach Mock Trial to thirty high school students at El Cerrito High School, preparing them for a Mock Trial competition.

Helped professors prepare online instructional material and post course work. Graded student homework and offered comments weekly. Aided in exam preparation and assessment.

Berkeley, Ca

Oversaw the student leaders of 26 pro bono groups on campus, under the Experiential Education initiative at Berkeley Law, which housed community initiatives by hundreds of law students. Organized recruitment, applications, enrollment, budgets, and fundraising. Contacted attorneys in the community to advocate for them to join our program and improve supervision practices. Assisted students with brainstorming new project goals, creating effective trainings, and obtaining adequate supervision. Traveled to conferences to promote and improve the program.

San Anselmo, Ca

Helped with discovery and depositions of current cases. Did intakes of new clients, involving one-on-one conversations and research of relevant law. Drafted demand letters, memos, and briefs. Participated in various depositions and mediations.

Visited immigration detention centers weekly, took statements from detainees, and provided emotional support. Monitored emerging civil liberties issues, focusing primarily on refugee issues and privacy violations. Communicated with complainants, providing issue-specific information and resources.
