I joined Pollinate back when it was called BitCork, when there was little more on the tech side than a few proof-of-concepts and a lot of enthusiasm. From the very beginning I was tasked with building out an entirely new back-end system from the ground up, which involved everything from the development of the initial application code, to updating an old framework to make it compatible with up-to-date tooling, to deploying the system onto cloud infrastructure. The initial build of the system was little more than a storage system for configuration info of some IoT devices.Since then, Pollinate has changed quite a bit, and not just in its name; what was once a business connecting small, local wineries to restaurants has expanded its scope to connect SMB food businesses in general and help them manage their day-to-day operations, and our software has undergone similar expansions in its scope and capabilities to make this all possible.

As the programming lead at Waitrainer, I was chiefly responsible for managing all components of the Waitrainer+™ training platform. During my time as an employee there, I oversaw and directly assisted in two major architectural migrations; laid the groundwork for future scalability efforts; improved application performance from processing times on the order of several hours down to a few seconds; researched, assessed, and integrated new technologies into the tech stack as needed; supervised and directed interns in developing production-level code with an emphasis on code quality and maintainability; and filled several other roles as required to fulfill tasks at every level of the system.My experiences working at Waitrainer imparted some very important lessons that were crucial for my growth as a programmer, and I will be taking those lessons with me wherever I end up in the future.

(September - December)During the remainder of my university studies I continued my internship with Waitrainer by working on the Waitrainer team to improve and expand upon existing production software. I optimized database queries to achieve critical performance improvements pending a migration to cloud server hosting and implemented features that improved support staff productivity.(July - September)During this time period my internship focused on developing an open source API for the Technology Association of Oregon under the direction of Waitrainer. I handled everything from requirements gathering, to determining a minimum viable product, to feature development, and finally deployment onto a production web server by the required deadline. Near the end of my time working on the project, I provided extensive documentation on accessing and managing the project resources to facilitate future development efforts.
