The research in my laboratory focuses on two cancers: the pediatric solid tumor neuroblastoma, and the adult hematologic ("liquid" cancer) cancer myeloma. While these cancers are vastly different, there is one thing in common, and that is that they are both treated with autologous (self) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Over the past several years, we have been devising new treatment strategies that involve the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a platform for immune-based therapies (ie., immunotherapies). The high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation used prior to transplantation reduces tumor burden and "resets" the immune system; therefore, immunotherapies might be more effective when given immediately following transplantation. Our overall hypothesis is that cancer immunotherapies are most successful when combined or used in conjunction with other therapies (conventional, targeted, etc.).
