The hydrogen economy is an important contributor to the switch from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Furthermore, the Haber-Bosch process requires high temperature and pressure to produce ammonia whilst plasma-catalytic processes can be operated at ambient temperature and pressure due to the non-equilibrium characteristics of the discharge. Currently, the Haber-Bosch process contributes 2-3 % of the greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and consumes over 1 % of the global primary energy supply; thus there is great potential for the plasma-catalytic process to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, limiting global warming.
