Principal Strategist & Senior Director, International Engagement
CurrentI have a dual role in ClimateWorks Foundation; As Senior Director, International Engagement I focus on international climate policy, platforms and processes to advance global climate action with a focus on the role climate philanthropy should play. Driven by the unfortunate convergence of geopolitical rifts and tensions and the urgency of climate action (which needs global cooperation), this role envisages to find ways to leverage global multilateral, plurilateral and bilateral platforms and processes to find climate solutions while elevating voice of and supporting global south. In my second but linked role as Principal Strategist, I advise and support ClimateWorks and several partner foundations on all aspects of India climate action and India’s role in the evolving global climate landscape. This includes strategy development, funder collaboration and coordination and catalytic grant making. In addition, I spend considerable time building local climate ecosystem including support to partners that lead on the evolution of domestic climate philanthropy and forging a stronger US-India collaboration on climate change (e.g US-India Track II Dialogue on Climate Change and several US-India sub-national engagement)

In this exciting position, I support ClimateWorks Foundation and several partner Foundations who have committed to deploy philanthropic resources in India to advance the country's development goals, particularly related to clean energy and climate change. In this cross-cutting role, I help and support key climate and energy focused philanthropic foundations to develop compelling ideas, common strategies around those ideas and identify partners on the ground to implement programs and projects. I also help ClimateWorks' mission of expanding climate philanthropy by providing India and 'India and the rest of the world' perspectives. At a broader level, my role is also to act as a bridge between international and India philanthropies particularly around climate change, energy and related thematic areas.
Country Representative-India
GGGI is an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) with a Mission to eradicate poverty through promoting inclusive economic growth and environmental sustainability around the world. In India GGGI works with national, state governments,cities and several highly credible local institutions. • As the first Country Head of India, within a year, established GGGI as a new institution in the country, built a team, developed Country/ Grant making strategies and put in place robust projects in three different states of India (after identifying, evaluating and prioritising opportunities in water, energy, agriculture, urban and transportation sectors- with mitigation and adaptation focus)• Successfully delivered 3 high impact sub-national green growth strategies, first of its kind in India, with strong government endorsement; Three specific recommendations accepted for implementation (covering areas of energy, water, agriculture) with explicit mitigation and adaptation benefits• Led national and state level government engagement and established credibility for GGGI; forged, nurtured and managed complex multi-stakeholder partnerships (governments, NGOs, research institutions, international institutions, donors)• Provide strategic and technical oversight in managing projects and programs with a focus on driving green growth at national and subnational levels• Evaluate and prioritize opportunities and policy actions, and synthesize recommendations and implementation plans, including technical and financial support vehicles and public-private cooperation mechanisms• As a Member of GGGI global management team contribute to GGGI global strategies, knowledge sharing and south-south collaboration
Director, Major Emerging Economies Initiative, Climate Change And Energy Program
In this challenging position, I provided leadership and direction to a 15 member multi-disciplinary team to assist key emerging economies on climate change mitigation while accelerating economic growth, energy access and maintaining environmental integrity (average annual budget $2.5million) • Played leadership role in developing WRI Climate change and Energy strategies for India, South Africa and Brazil and contributed to China strategy; successfully concluded partnerships aimed at assisting national efforts towards mitigation, clean energy and energy access• Developed and communicated a compelling and coherent vision and strategy for the Major Emerging Economies Initiative and created new lines of work in the areas of energy and climate change • Provided strategic direction and oversight to national and global projects in the areas of power sector, renewable energy, climate policy, capacity building in developing countries to measure and manage emissions and promoting business leadership on clean energy• Served as spokesperson for the Major Emerging Economies Initiative, communicating to key audience, the research findings and policy recommendations emerging out of research and field projects• In collaboration with project managers and WRI’s development team, made substantial contribution to secure long-term funding for the Initiative by shaping innovative ideas, concepts and proposals• Effectively conceived and designed a low carbon economic unit in WRI as a centre of excellence to make economic case for mitigation and transition to clean energy systems• Quality controlled research, analysis and communication products of the team
Senior Adviser- Climate Change And Energy Policy
• Played lead advisory role in identifying and promoting innovative initiatives under the UK Strategic Program Fund for climate mitigation in the broad categories of energy, environment and private sector engagement on low carbon development• As part of the core team, set the agenda for and conducted the India-UK Structural Dialogue on Climate Change between the governments of UK and India on mitigation and adaptation• As part of the leadership team, developed climate program strategy, business plan, national and sub-national plans and performance metrics of the climate change unit that entailed analysis of key policies, assessing key economic and political trends vis a vis energy and climate change in India, US and other BASIC countries• Acted as the national coordinator for UK government’s “Prosperity Campaign” aimed at developing innovative, market led approaches to promote UK-India private sector engagement on climate change. The India Campaign strategy was rated as the ‘best’ among the entire UK embassy network• Provided timely, accurate and evidence based policy analysis and advice on international climate policy including UNFCCC negotiation and near-negotiations, EU –India Summit, G20 and MEF vis a vis India- in close consultation and partnership with national level line ministries, civil society groups, research institutions, individual experts, bi and multilateral institutions• Provided accurate and timely analysis, advice and reports on national and sub-national climate change actions and identified strategic opportunities for India-UK engagement
Senior Adviser- Environment And Climate Change
• Lead role in recasting Norway-India development cooperation by conceptualising and setting up of the India-Norway Joint Working Group (JWG) on Environment with a strong focus on energy and climate change, a step considered as a breakthrough in bilateral partnership• Led and delivered India country strategy on environment and climate change, the first ever strategy for Norway in India• Renewed, designed and managed Norway’s flag ship Indo- Norwegian Institutional Research Cooperation Program on environment, climate change, energy and natural resource management; • Played dual role as Program Manager and Adviser, and within two years built a portfolio of 12 research projects (such as mitigation in forestry, low sulphur diesel, CDM, clean energy and so on) worth NOK 36million• Led the Indo-Norwegian Environment Program (INEP), a portfolio of 15 projects across two states of India that led to a series of outcomes• In recognition my contribution to promote bilateral ties, invited by the Norwegian Parliament Committee on Environment to give testimony in Storting (Norwegian Parliament) to further strengthen India-Norway bilateral relationship• Led advisory inputs, policy analysis and developed high quality issue based reports and briefings to the Ambassador, senior officials and several times to the Norwegian Foreign and Environment Ministers
