I’m leading UK Policy and Partnerships at OpenAI. I’ve held roles working at the intersection of AI and equity in industry, civil society, and philanthropy. Most recently, I was a Program Officer on AI2050, a philanthropic initiative within Schmidt Futures designed to support multi-disciplinary research on beneficial AI. Prior to joining Schmidt Futures, I was the Policy Director at Data & Society Research Institute, a nonprofit research institute challenging the power and purpose of technology in society. I led the organization’s first policy engagement team, using sociotechnical research to advance equity and justice within technology policy and governance spaces, and working closely in coalition with others to encourage federal AI policies that re-center civil rights and public benefit.I also worked at Alphabet in a range of policy and government affairs roles in London and San Francisco. At Google, I led European public policy strategy on issues related to extremism, free expression, and hate speech on Search and YouTube, including creating new counter-speech efforts with civil society groups from around the region. At DeepMind, I helped build the company’s first policy and ethics research team, and subsequently led partnerships and public engagement on a range of AI policy issues. I also created and led new programs on human rights and racial justice.I’m an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, and previously held fellowships at the Royal Society of the Arts and the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge.
