Environmental Health Specialist

• Performs inspections of various facilities including food establishments, hotels, schools, public restroom, and mobile food and retail units to determine conformance with applicable federal and state regulations and local ordinances• Conducts soil evaluations, designs septic system lateral field options, and inspects new and existing septic sewage systems for compliance with the state of Kentucky• Provides health education and technical assistance to individuals for compliance with local and federal regulations by teaching certified pool operators and certified food managers classes• Investigates complaints of environmental health problems, environmental health hazards, and food-borne illness and initiates enforcement or corrective actions as required• Collaborates in the development and delivery of programs and activities that promote health and prevent disease in settings including, but not limited to, the Health Department, homes, community organizations and businesses, schools, and the community in general• Delivers targeted, culturally-appropriate information to help individuals and groups understand local environmental public health policies, regulations and code• Collaborates with the local humane society to properly quarantine and release animals following a victim bite report or delivers specimen to the state laboratory for further testing• Performs public health emergency response duties as assigned and consistent with training provided and job classification, in response to threats to the publics’ health
