I briefed our findings to Senior Leaders and lead the delivery of resultant change projects.Projects include large scale programme to predict and prevent crime, assess and reduce racial disparity (eg in strip search, use of force), evaluate forensic spray impact on burglary, reduce violence, predict and prevent reoffending among young people, reduce assaults on officers, assess decline in trust and confidence, among others. To ensure the ethical undertaking of research in the MPS I also formed MetREC, the Met Research Ethics Committee to ensure all research undertaken by the MPS meets high ethical standards.Prior to that, I lead the Specialist Firearms Command's teams of Tactical Firearms Commanders, using empirical methods to improve decision making and leading the teams in an exceptionally busy operational period. My credibility as a leader was reinforced by my own experiences as a Specialist Tactical Firearms Commander, delivering the resourcing, planning, threat and risk assessment and implementation of high risk armed policing operations. I worked under intense pressure and with collapsing time frames to mitigate the threat posed by the unlawful use of firearms and other life threatening weapons. As a Hostage and Crisis Negotiator I deployed more than 60 times to people in crisis. Listening, persuading and ultimately resolving the crisis without loss of life required a complex set of skills, self knowledge and teamwork with incident commanders and other negotiators. Show less
