I led a staff of up to eight full-time journalists, as well as several correspondents. I managed the daily operations of the award-winning, 141-year-old newspaper in addition to shaping long-term content and audience-growth strategies. Under my leadership, the paper’s online audience more than doubled, due to journalistic excellence and using analytics to guide newsroom strategy. My day-to-day responsibilities included overseeing coverage, editing articles and writing the paper’s unsigned editorials, in addition to a range of management duties. I was also the public face of the newsroom, requiring me to represent the paper in interactions with elected officials, prominent residents and members of the public.

This position required covering local government meetings and poring over complex public records and other documents, then distilling the information into concise, accurate, easy-to-read articles.

I was the prep sports reporter for the largest daily newspaper in Utah, a position that emphasized in-depth journalism exploring the vital topics affecting schools and their athletes. I developed a strong social media following and used video to engage my audience.

I covered the police and breaking news beat in one of Utah’s major metropolitan areas, examining issues such as the rise of police shootings in Northern Utah and the efficacy of mental health courts for convicts. I also developed an audience on social media, and often shot photos that ran alongside my articles.
