Sep 2018 - May 2019

Laboratory Assistant

Dr. Ryan Hayward Lab - Umass Amherst - Research Group Polymer And Engineering

Researched on programmed liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) with tunable light actuation strain via LCE nanocomposites. Attempted to incorporate gold nanoparticles into LCE as the way to generate heat which drives desire LCE shape change due to the electric field from light. Evaluated the effect of nanoparticle loading on the mechanical properties of these films, and found that at low loadings these materials retained their elastomeric properties. Assessed the effect of chain extenders on the thermomechanical properties of LCEs, and showed that the nematic-isotropic transition could be tailored over several tens of degrees by changing the length of the chain extender. Collaborated with a PhD student instructor collecting data using differential canning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as the tools of statistical analysis. Designed the procedure to achieve the well-disperse nanocomposites in LCE through engineered the nanoparticles’ surface properties by grafting liquid crystal ligands to the surface using functional handle. Examine on LCEs mechanical responses by performing the uniaxial tensile test investigating the time-dependent properties of the LCEs material using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Jun 2013 - Dec 2018

Reu Intern

University Of Akron – College Of Polymer Science And Polymer Engineering

Studied the stability of imprinted polymer nanocomposites (IPNCs) using direct immersion annealing (DIA). Fabricated poly(methyl methacrylate) – silica nanoparticles thin film at different nanoparticles loading ratios. Compared bare versus grafted nanoparticles nanocomposites system in term of macro-level effect of pattern surface structure to the IPNCs thin film’s stability. Determined that grafted silica NPs nanocomposite film exhibited significant stabilization of pattern thin films compared to bare silica NPs. Investigated relaxation dynamics of IPNCs film pattern height subject to direct immersion annealing for the nanoscale examination in film slumping kinetics. This study showed that higher NPs loading provided enhanced surface structure resistance to slumping pattern behavior. To conduct my projects, hands-on experiences were obtained in various characterized techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry, etc.

Reu Intern

Dr. Jacinta C. Conrad - Dr. Megan Robertson - University Of Houston

Synthesized poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brushes using surface-initiated atom transfer radical method on titanium, silicon and glass substrates at different thickness and low dispersity. Characterized polymer synthesis using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-NMR) to indicate the polymer brushes successfully synthesized, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) refractometry to determine low dispersity of polymer solution, and spectroscopic ellipsometry to measure brushes thickness. Investigated barite crystal growth on silicon and glass substrates in the way of studying the crystal morphology behavior versus different PtBA brushes thickness. Performed the bacterial adhesion experiment by monitoring the attachment and detachment of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Studied the bacterial attachment on PAA brushes coated titanium substrate increased as the brushes thickness decreased, and bacteria were detached from PAA brushes as the pH was switched from 4 to 9. Operated multiple experiments to demonstrate that polymer brushes may be an effective strategy against different types of fouling across a variety of substrates as the way of reducing material costs and increasing energy and material sustainability.
