BOEING PROJECT: Separation control by Using Dynamic Pins and Vortex Generators (VG)* Developed piezoelectric strips for dynamic pins and VGs in collaboration with Boeing Actuator Design Team.* Experimental and computational analyses conducted to explore the effect of dynamic pin and VGs on flow separation.* Future design and optimization will be conducted on different airfoils to build fuel-efficient planes.AIR FORCE OFFICE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (AFOSR) PROJECT: Investigation of laminar separation bubble and stall cells on performance of different airfoils* Designed and constructed experimental setups to conduct experiments up to Rec = 9x10^6 on different airfoils. * Extensively studied the detailed flow structure at various instability stages of stall cells and laminar separation bubble, and their effects on the performance of NACA 0009, 0015, and 2218.* Simulated extensively 2-D and 3-D unsteady flow physics, and cross-compared them with experimental results. NORTHROP GRUMMAN CORPORATION PROJECT: Control of laminar to turbulence of transition by actively controlling Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) waves * Designed and conducted wind tunnel experiments, and developed a method “Phase-Locking” to detect T-S waves.* Computational and experimental methods have been applied to cancel T-S waves and delay turbulence on a flat plate. * Designed an experimental setup to delay turbulence transition on a NACA 0009 airfoil.** Combined experimental and computational methods to increase efficiency of project teams.** Developed UDF’s (User Defined Functions) to implement dynamic mesh (C coding) for active flow control actuators that are used to delay turbulence transition, cancel flow separation, increase mixing, and reduce drag. ** Supervision and management of three R&D project team involving M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. ** Organizing and planning of wind tunnel facility; and educate Ph.D. students on experimental methods and testing.
