This project investigates the use of actuator materials in heat engines and moisture engines. Materials that contract on exposure to heat and / or moisture will be developed and characterised in terms of their actuation performance. Reciprocating engine designs will be investigated and designed to operate by repeatedly cycling a band or fibre through hot/wet and cold/dry zones. The engine design will be matched to the material capabilities for optimal performance.
