Black River Asset Management, a subsidiary of Cargill, is an independently run global asset management company with more than $6 billion in assets under management, offices in ten countries and more than 20 years of worldwide investment experience. Black River is Cargill’s former proprietary trading operation, Cargill Global Capital Markets.Supported the long/short equity team in a business analyst role; facilitating solutions to achieve their goals in their investment, operational and cross-functional objectives. • Designed and automated a comprehensive top trade report that helped principals and portfolio managers to assess and manage risk for the long short equity funds. Streamlined the process, reducing the time invested to producing the report from 4 hours to only 30 minutes a week.• Collaborated with our fund administrator to design an FX balances report which incorporated investment market values versus their respective spot or forward currency hedges. The output of this report was the foundation for our periodic currency hedging process and our real time performance estimates. Daily estimate variances went down to immaterial levels after implementation, whereas prior they could have spike as high as 3 basis points.• Created several novel reports comparing steel and coal prices to various equities that were used daily by the portfolio manager and were credited with directing his focus and decision-making, and ultimately contributed to generating over $40 million in trading profits over five years. • Designed and implemented trade capture process that reduced beginning and end of day report processing time and decreased trade breaks. Allowed portfolio managers more time to analyze holdings, risk and market data prior to market open.

The report, nicknamed the “Joel Report” became a valuable tool for decision makers and client managers. • Led High Water Mark/Performance fee automation for all Black River funds and Cargill Managed Accounts. Implemented a process which delivered an accurate fund performance fee estimate on the second business day after month end, previously only available on sixth business day. This provided management with more accurate daily and month end NAV's and better asset allocation information.• Spearheaded the initiative to replace an antiquated Investor Allocation system with an integrated, scalable system designed to reduce manual processes while improving accuracy and timeliness of data. Performed technical due diligence, and worked with diverse stakeholders to secure buy in. Identified options and made solid recommendations based on thorough analysis.• Recognized by the head of investor reporting as the go-to person for analysis and reporting needs. This was symbolized by the presentation of a “1-800-CALL-JOEL” t-shirt at an employee recognition event.
