About Tim Burton

A creative who loves tech, or a geek with a music degree. I'm not sure which.A firm believer in technology - the right technology - the achieve the creative vision whilst working for the business goals too. In a world where too many solutions look like a Rube Goldberg machine, I like to follow Colin Chapman's (the Lotus Cars & F1 founder) philosophy of 'simply, then add lightness'.

  • Aframe Ltd
    Cto
    Aframe Ltd Jan 2010 - Mar 2013
    London, United Kingdom
Aframe is a powerful video production service that makes searching, sharing and storing footage easy. Media is securely stored, you can share it with anyone and it’s tagged to make improve searching.Joining Aframe as part of the founding team, we took the company from 3 blokes above a soho knocking shop to a multinational employing 40+ staff across the UK and US. Three rounds of private and VC funding have seen Aframe raise just short of $10m, and is well on it's way to profitability and series B funding to scale out the business model. My role at Aframe was act as a bridge between all departments, from providing support to sales, through escalation point for the professional services team, to providing a media workflow and technical reference point to the development team.I also acted as the product owner within the Agile methodology (scrum) we employed for managing the product features and dev team workload.I architected the multisite distributed platform the Aframe product is deployed on. 3 of the 4 datacenter locations are 'lights out' (LA, NYC, and Durham), with careful hardware selection and fault tolerant designs enable minimal engineer intervention. The US sites have not been visited since their install over a year ago, with minor HDD or PSU issues being handled by handled easy by colo staff.

  • Unit Post Production
    Technical Manager
Unit Post Production Apr 2006 - Jul 2008
I started at Unit post the week before they opened their doors fo the first time as a freelance Final Cut Pro and post production specialist. I quickly became staff and helped grow the company from a small 4 suite boutique facility to a 20 suite one stop shop offering Offline, Online, Grade, Audio and VFX services to customers including Apple, Sky, BBC and Mazda.Unit was unique in being a 'data centric' facility, where we considered extensive central storage > more conventional SDI matrix approach. Customers loved the high level of collaboration offered by our (then) unique workflows. Where we'd often have two-three editors, a brace of VFX artist and the 10 man strong MCR team working simultaneously on the same project. Unit's XSAN implementation is still used as a case study on the Apple website today. One of the big challenges when doing something different is staff with the prerequisite knowledge are often at the top of the their game. So along with co-founder Tom bridges I designed a comprehensive training program to bring graduates into the industry and give them the skills and knowledge required to be productive members of the Unit MCR team. Many of these guys and girls have gone on to be successful editors, vfx artists and 1 an engineer.
