I am working on Surface Haptics. As. touch screens are ubiquitous, with varying degrees for digital controls. Some still accompanying physical controls, while others forgo them in favour for digital controls like, sliders, knobs and keyboards. These representations of physical controls provide natural and intuitive user experience. However, there is no haptic feedback available during interaction with these digital controls. In contrast to their physical counterparts, that guide users’ motion and provide right haptic feedback, digital controls cannot be felt and require visual focus to perform a task which results in decrease in user’s performance. Therefore, eye-free manipulation is nearly impossible while interacting with digital controls. My research is based on introducing data-driven haptic enabled digital controls to replicate the same haptic feeling as with traditional physical controls.
