3.1% of all dentists in the United States are African American and or African. Therefore, representation is essential, and I am unique in that very few individuals in dentistry look like me. This statistic is a reason why I have chosen dentistry. I have been a dental assistant for over six years and always learn new things. Working as a dental assistant, I have been fortunate enough to aid patients in feeling more confident in themselves and their lives. I love to see the transformation that occurs in front of me from when a patient comes into the office, voicing their complaints and leaving feeling better. I was once a patient who went into the dental office with broken teeth from a school incident, and within an hour, I could not stop smiling. Later I was fortunate enough to receive braces, and ever since, I gain a new confidence every time someone says to me, “You have a beautiful smile” I want to pour back into dentistry the way it has poured into me. Sharing my plans of sitting on the other side of the chair with patients is heartfelt, especially from minority patients. They always offer encouragement and share with me how important it is for someone like me to become a dentist. So, to meet this goal of mine, I decided to pursue a master's degree.I am a University of Detroit Mercy Graduate pursuing a non-thesis master's in Molecular Cellular Biology at Eastern Michigan University. I am learning to expand my connection and network with the scientific community in this program. What I enjoy most about this program is the flexibility to speak and write about topics that interest me. I am a hard worker and a team player, and I love to build meaningful relationships. I also enjoy reading, cooking, working out, and traveling with my best friends. You can find me at the newest coffee shop opening up when I am not at school.
