About Ellen Butters

I enjoy connecting disparate people, teams and skill sets, and fostering collaboration to create the highest quality digital experiences. I love the challenge of designing beautiful interfaces within the data-driven parameters of good UX, with end products that are both usable and distinctly branded. It's a challenge with both subjective (how does it feel?) and objective (can I use it?) components, and solving both is a fascinating endeavor. I've been designing for 16 years and solving UX problems for 9, and as technology evolves it only gets more fun. View my portfolio at buttersdesign.com.

  • Amazon Web Services (Aws)
Senior Ux Business Development Manager – Worldwide Public Sector (Wwps) Digital Innovation
Amazon Web Services (Aws) Apr 2023 - Present
    Seattle, Wa, Us
As a member of the AWS WWPS Digital Innovation team, I help strategic AWS Public Sector customers solve mission-critical problems during their early innovation stages. These solutions vary from helping public health officials combat medical misinformation to empowering college students to optimize their educational investments, to helping cities become more resilient to climate change. Leveraging Amazon's Working Backwards methodology, my role focuses on realizing new, big ideas by designing tangible, testable prototypes or service blueprints that wield the full spectrum of AWS capabilities. I help WWPS customers validate forward-looking solutions with their end-customers and then facilitate their next steps to building, including scoping a Minimum Loveable Product (MLP) and handing off to build partners. Throughout this process, I manage UX partners to scale resources up or down according to the needs of the customer.
  • Amazon Web Services (Aws)
Senior User Experience Designer, Worldwide Public Sector (Wwps) Innovation Studio
Amazon Web Services (Aws) Sep 2021 - Dec 2023
    Seattle, Wa, Us
As the Lead UX Designer of the AWS Worldwide Public Sector Innovation Studio, I oversee the strategy and execution of all human centered design (HCD) activities related to "innovation," including everything from idea through formal, large-investment, technological "build." Such activities include discovery research, ethnographic interviewing, problem/opportunity evaluation, persona development, stakeholder mapping, service blueprinting, problem/opportunity validation, concept design, concept validation, User Flows and UI design, prototyping (in collaboration with FE engineers), and solution validation. As a founding member of this net-new program, my role requires strategic thinking at the business level as well. My north star is working on opportunities that make sustainable, lasting impact on the world's largest problems (e.g. climate change). This impact should be a win-win-win for people, the organizations whose missions are to serve them, and AWS.
  • United States Digital Service, White House
Digital Service Expert, Full Stack Ux Designer
United States Digital Service, White House Jul 2017 - Aug 2021
This was an intense, 4-year "tour of service" at USDS, which sits in the White House. I used every tool in the Human Centered Design toolbox to solve both emergency, short-term design and technology problems (through discovery sprints), and longer-term modernization and product-development projects. Contributed to cross-agency immigration programs such as Refugee (USRAP), Unaccompanied Children, and Asylum; large-scale Medicare API initiatives; and the initial CDC COVID response website.More specifically:Designed real time dashboards and daily snapshots to help the highest levels of government understand the movement of migrant unaccompanied children and families entering the U.S. at the southern border; visualized forecasts for different policies that enabled the White House to make critical, data-driven decisions.Applied Human Centered Design (HCD) principles and practices to design an Asylum case adjudication app that increased both the efficiency and fairness of Asylum decisions at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).Designed a website, explainer video, and software prototype to raise awareness and understanding of a new Medicare API—‘Data at the Point of Care’—that gives a patient’s health providers visibility into their collective treatment history, so they can provide faster, more informed, better quality health care.Defined a new, centralized Creative Director role for the U.S. Digital Service; produced the foundational style guides and templates for the agency’s branding, storytelling, and recruiting, including a new website, event materials, and administrator slide decks.
