The flybmi.com internet booking engine (IBE) powers 25% of the company’s entire revenue stream by providing a sophisticated and flexible ecommerce booking platform for the airline. This platform generates £10 million from 2 million visitors every month. In addition to booking flights, the IBE also allows ancillary products from other supplies to be purchased. The well designed, stable and scaleable architecture that I have contributed towards make this a seamless process for users of the system. My core focus is on back-end development of the system’s data model and the integration of it with multiple 3rd parties. This is achieved through a combination of Microsoft BizTalk messaging, WCF and direct XML web service consumption for fast and reliable order processing.During my employment I have gained a lot of useful commercial and business experience. I have been in a position where communication with both technical and non-technical colleagues has been very important and can confidently say that I the quality of my work reflects this.The role at bmi involves developing solutions in an agile scrum environment with regular deployments to meet the needs of the business. At bmi I am exposed to a wide variety of systems, technologies and the interoperability between them. Primarily I work with C#, WCF, XML, and MSSQL on the ASP.NET platform, in addition to MS BizTalk server.

After joining bmi in 2007 and being recognised as a senior developer in 2009 I have been responsible for numerous on-going projects and have gained a huge amount of experience. At bmi I work in a team developing the flybmi.com booking engine and the availability request caching (ARC) service.ARC is a system responsible for communicating with an expensive source of flight availability and pricing data, intelligently caching that data based on various business rules, and then exposing it as a valuable data feed for 3rd party clients to consume. This data feed is exposed as XML through a WCF service. From its conception, I have been deeply involved with the design, development and maintenance of this system including both its internal architecture and the standards based format of the data that it exposes. More recently I re-engineered the system to support much greater load with improved performance. This was achieved through a streamlined database design making effective use of indexing, an optimised data format and enhanced processing workflows. Initially, I prototyped the new system design on the Windows Azure platform using a SQL Azure database to perform its caching role. The system now handles in excess of 1 million requests per week with an average response time of just 0.6 seconds.(Continued in next position...)

At Advanced Software I developed an internal software system to enable the management of a new build and release process using .net technologies. In addition I was heavily involved in the development and maintenance of the commercial workflow productivity tool CasePRO. C#, VB, .NET and SQLServer were the core technologies I used during my employment with the company.

I was employed at CERN for the duration of the industrial placement year of my university degree. While there I worked as part of a team developing large scale J2EE project planning and tracking tools with regular deployment schedules. The areas of involvement and responsibility I had primarily consisted of software testing and refactoring as well as web interface design.
