Designed, implemented, and completed projects to analyze the chemical composition of the ocean, in particular dissolved metabolites.Analytical responsibilities: sample collection (dissolved and particulate) in the field and from laboratory experiments, analysis of dissolved metabolites using (U)HPLC-MSMS, and development of new methods for the measurement of dilute dissolved and particulate metabolites (wet chemistry - derivatization). All analyses were conducted with rigorous attention to detail, careful documentation, and high accuracy and precision.Communication: Oral and written, including 1:1 communications with supervisors and peers, peer-reviewed scientific publications, grant reports, and formal oral presentations to my group (~6 people) and public audiences (10-200 people). Brittany also designed SOPs including a video protocol of novel methods.

Conducted chemical and biological analyses on seawater and freshwater samples using analytical chemical techniques.Technical Responsibilities: Collected and analyzed dissolved and particulate samples from laboratory experiments and in the field, including sea, estuarine, and fresh surface water, wastewater, aerosols, and rainwater. Analyses included thousands of nutrient measurements [manual (UV-Vis, Fluorometry) and autoanalyzer (FIA) methods], pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll and flow cytometry, bacterial counts, and stable isotope measurements. Brittany also designed a novel pre-column derivatization HPLC-Fluorometry method for the measurement of nanomolar cyanate in fresh and saline samples. Communications: Oral and written. These included 1:1 communication with supervisors, peers, and student interns, peer-reviewed scientific publications, grant reports, and formal oral presentations to the research group (~10 people) and public audiences (10-200 people).Project Management: Designed and implemented oceanographic research projects individually and as part of a team in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In the Pacific, Brittany was primarily responsible for examining organic matter and nitrogen cycling in anoxic marine waters. She supervised junior colleagues and students in sample collection and the deployment of oceanographic sampling equipment (CTD). In the Atlantic, Brittany served as chief scientist on expeditions to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay (8 x 1 day trips) and chief investigator in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (1 x 14 days). For both Atlantic projects, Brittany allocated scientific personnel (20 people) and resources, liaised with ships' captains and crews, and ensured fulfillment of project objectives as well as those of collaborators. This project was focused on nitrogen and carbon cycling in estuarine and coastal waters.
