A Problem Solver. That is the best description I have for who I am and what I can do. In engineering school we were taught how to dissect complex problems and build solutions that dealt with the base issues not just the surface ones. In my career in the construction industry I have used that training to solve problems on a daily basis, much of the time with the only information given being, "It doesn't work, fix it." Finding real world solutions for complex, multi faceted issues and applying them to create real world change is what I can do and what I want to do. While looking for a field where I could explore my passion for problem solving, I came across data science. Nowadays where it is difficult for people to agree on facts, I was heartened by the idea of decision making based on data being a growing field. The more I read the more I was drawn in and a few main points about the industry really drove my interest. First was the breadth of the Data for Good movement and how engaged the industry seems to be with ensuring that the promise of data driven decisions aren't just for the biggest and richest companies as well as ensuring these tools are applied in ethical frameworks that don't further deepen the existing equity divides. Second, is the welcoming nature of people in the industry. People are excited to share and teach new things, which is endearing and necessary in a field like data science where new coding languages, packages and algorithms are being created at such a fast pace. Lastly I am happy to see how much emphasis the data science community has put on storytelling. It is ironic that when we focus on finding solutions based on data not anecdote, it is the anecdote that we need to come back to as a conveyance system for our insights that were proven out by the data. Data science is that balance of knowing the answer and conveying the answer, and I look forward to working on solving complex problems and telling the stories that exist within our data.
