The role comprised the day to day running of the Task Force Helmand Operations room, which involved overseeing all activity taking place in Helmand between April and October on behalf of the Brigade Commander.This also required the running of a number of brigade level operations, most of them jointly with the Afghanistan National Security Forces.

For Operation HERRICK 16, Ben controlled and coordinated the Battlefield Casualty Replacement pool. This involved maintaining a battalion sized group of soldiers and officers of all ranks, skill sets and trades, so that they were ready to deploy at very short notice. This was to replace any solider that was injured whilst on operations in Afghanistan,The role was complex and involved daily liaison with multiple agencies, including Regimental, Brigade and Divisional HQs and PJHQ. As part of the role, Ben was also deployed to Afghanistan for a period of time.
Second In Command
Ben assumed the 2IC post of the UK's only Light Role CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear) Squadron before G Sqn was chosen to provide armoured capability to 12 Mechanized Brigade's deployment to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 16.G Sqn had to re-role, re-train and re-form from a CBRN squadron to a MASTIFF squadron in a very short time period considering the amount of work that was done. This was made more complex because each of the four troops were being attached to a different infantry battalion.Once the troops were deployed, Ben's focus then switched to the BCR OC role (see above), but whilst maintaining a pastoral role for the deployed troops until their return.
Mastiff Troop Leader
Provided armoured support to the 3 PARA Battle Group Headquarters during deployment to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 13. Role involved advising on the use of armour, and commanding the MASTIFF Sqn in Nad-e-Ali North.

Commanding a three tank troop, consisting of twelve men of varying ranks. Included a 3 month deployment to Canada.
