My PhD thesis set out to understand the aerodynamics of plasma-body interactions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and how they might influence them motion of LEO objects.This was acheived through the development of a hybrid Particle-in-Cell (PIC) / Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) code that I developed as an extension of the OpenFOAM framework in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde. First principle dimensional analysis of the problem revealed new plasma-body interaction scaling laws that were applied to isolate and untangle the direct and indirect forces exerted on a body immersed in a flowing mesothermal plasma. By developing an understanding of the fundamental physics involved, a physics-based response surface was constructed to demonstrate that there do, in fact, exist conditions where ionospheric aerodynamics appears to have an appreciable influence on the motion of LEO objects.
