Dr. Giles was the cocreator of the popular academic search engines: CiteSeer, now CiteSeerX. He also codeveloped other specialty search engines such as ChemXSeer for chemistry; BotSeer for robots.txt; CollabSeer for collaboration search, ArchSeer for archaeology; Refseer for citations, AckSeer for acknowledgements, BizSeer for academic business and PrivaSeer for web privacy policies. He also published several deep learning recurrent architectures and tuned two BERT transformers for a privacy large language model, PrivBERT, and a language model for scientific paper summarization, SciBERTSUM.His current research and consulting interests are in intelligent information search for specialty and niche domains, big data using AI and machine learning methods, and deep learning for sequences and grammars. His research has been highlighted in the New York Times, Wired Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. He is ranked at one of the top 200 computer scientists world wide.
