The objects I create; paintings, collages, sculptures, installations and writings, along with the activities I generate; the cultural celebrations, the art events, the exhibits, the teaching, are all part of my artistic expression. Art lives in Culture. History gives us the understanding of Culture. I like to study the times I live in, and with my art, review history as a process to create a better future. I hope to fulfill my purpose as an artist when my work interacts with people, bringing our cultural, social, and individual personas across. I was born and bred in Tijuana, Mexico. I grew up in a hybrid culture, very solid in my Mexican culture, and at the same time, very familiar with the culture of the United States. I also had a sense of distrust and acceptance of both cultures. My experiences in Mexico City (5 years), Central America (2 years) and Canada (14 years), made me review my thoughts about the concept of “border”, and along with my experiences in Los Angeles, California (15 years), makes me realize that a “border” is a state of mind that limits us, and that the future lies mostly in the acceptance of our differences.
Listed skills include Art, Fine Art, Painting, Galleries, and 10 others.

“MARIPOSA” (a.k.a. Hotel Londres) was a common place of passage, a place of waiting where for years thousands of migrants identified this space as a sanctuary to rest, renew energy and gather information to cross the border and continue their journey. A place of pilgrims, monarch butterflies, in search of the sweetness of a better life, a place where these modern gypsies left the walls drenched in the sweetness of their dream. We would like to honor them, emulators of the monarch butterfly, taking into this new adventure their inspiration to join the movement in the transformation of our City. The intention is to house artists from Southern California and all over the world, including artists from other cities in Mexico. The studios are available for rent to artists for one year, three (3) months or on a monthly basis. The studios have an average of 660 sq. ft., consisting of one bedroom with closet, working area, kitchenette, and bathroom with shower and hot water. The building is totally secured. Free Wi-Fi. US cell phones can be used to call the US and to receive calls from the US. There is an exhibit space “GALERIA MARIPOSA MONARCA” 550 sq. ft of floor space, 79" of linear space, 8 ft high wall space (632 cubic ft.) that is available to residents and local artists. The main building has a mid-50’s construction modernist architecture of the so-called “retro” style. By coincidence somewhat reminiscent of a butterfly. Why is Colonia Federal in Tijuana a perfect place for San Diego artists? Colonial Federal is located right at the border next to the entrance gate to Mexico. The neighborhood is isolated from Tijuana by the border, Tijuana River and Highway No. 1 entrance to Mexico. The neighborhood consists of only eight blocks, population approximately 500 with one way in and one way out. For more info contact the director at luis@luisituarte.com
