C. Matthew Hawkins: I am a seminarian in the Pittsburgh Catholic diocese. I am also a historian and a writer. My academic disciplines are American history, social work (economic development), and education policy. I also assist in developing curricula for K-12 education.I believe that curiosity and perseverance are essential character traits to cultivate in potential learners. I also believe that today's learners benefit from practices and exercises that help them to develop their concentration skills and ability to focus.Because we are no longer in an age in which there are just a few repositories (such as libraries, schools and teachers) of scarce information, but rather we are inundated with an overabundance of information that we must sift through, categorize and evaluate, I believe that it is important for learners of all ages to develop critical thinking and internet literacy skills. I believe that one of the most effective ways of doing this is through student-centered inquiry-based learning.Metacognition -- getting into the habit of thinking about one's process of thinking -- is a key pedagogical objective in classes that I teach. My research focuses on engaging young Black males in schooling. As a seminarian I am interested in helping lay persons cultivate their prayer life. I am strongly interested in developing skills in spiritual direction and pastoral care.As a writer and community practitioner I believe that we are all enriched when we hear each other’s stories. That is why one of my strongest passions is to help institutions, businesses, organizations and individuals develop and tell their stories.

Adjunct (History) FacultyCarlow University Sep 1995 - PresentGreater Pittsburgh AreaWhen I graduated with Master of Science in Applied History at Carnegie Mellon University my area of concentration was applied history. The purpose of applied history is use the study of history to inform policy makers and opinion shapers as they try to understand current social phenomena. In the process of teaching history to students I have discovered that history comes alive when students work directly with primary sources. Digital learning platforms are making this increasingly possible. I work with students as they use newspapers, photographic images, editorial cartoons and other historical artifacts to examine the period they are studying. -

Adjunct FacultyUniversity Of Pittsburgh Sep 2011 - Aug 2014Greater Pittsburgh AreaI am very interested in how students learn through the process of writing. I am interested in helping students develop their ideas on paper. This has been my focus whether I am teaching courses in social work, history, or education. My research, in the School of Education, focuses on relationships between racial identity and schooling.I am also interested in exploring the full potential of online learning platforms to enhance education. Rather than focusing too much on the potential negative aspects of online learning platforms, of which we should all be aware, I am interested in developing the potential for using these platforms to increase student engagement in learning, learner-to-learner interaction, contrasting and comparing perspectives, and figuring out what to do with the plethora of information that is now available on the internet. While most of my instruction still takes place within the classroom, I have been developing skills in getting the most out of online learning platforms in every course that I teach in every university. I am familiar with both Blackboard and Desire 2 Learn as learning tools to supplement the work I do. -
Adjunct Faculty (Social Work And Education)University Of Pittsburgh Sep 2004 - Aug 2014Greater Pittsburgh AreaWhen I graduated from the School of Social Work at the University, with an MSW, my focus was on community practice skills, particularly as these skills apply to discovering and developing community assets. When I taught in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, students participated in a study of the relationship between the school, as an institution, and the surrounding community. The objective was to help students become more aware of how to engage parents (and other care providers) and community resources as partners in the process of education. Both in social work and in education I have focused on ways to increase the degree to which recipients of services were invested in services that were provided so that they could get the most out of these services. -
