My PhD research at UConn involved the development, analysis, and testing of high temperature ceramic matrix composites. My group worked closely with NASA and United Technologies to investigate novel ways of improving their high temperature materials technologies.Much of my work involved the chemical vapor infiltration of ceramic coatings (silicon carbide, boron nitride, titanium carbide, carbon) onto ceramic fibers (silicon carbide, carbon). I also have research experience with the synthesis and application of pre-ceramic polymers. Most recently, I have been working with my group to optimize the CVI of carbon/carbon composite materials.Our lab is extensively outfitted with vacuum systems, compressed gas flow systems, and furnaces. We use UConn's network of scientific instrumentation to examine the materials we produce, including mechanical testing, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, etc.

Collins Aerospace in Santa Fe Springs, CA is involved with the production of high temperature composite materials. This internship was a great opportunity to apply my experience as a laboratory researcher towards materials and process development in the industry. I was part of a small R&D team working with managers, operators, technicians, and other engineers to maintain and upgrade the operation of large-scale chemical vapor infiltration reactors. I was involved with controlling temperature/pressure/flow, coordinating testing and characterization, spec’ing parts, procuring equipment, and various other tasks associated with reactor operation. I became familiar with the challenges of scaling up a benchtop process to one that can produce many parts at once. Rather than taking on just the menial “intern” tasks, I truly felt I was a unique asset to the team and was able to contribute in a valuable way.Chemical vapor infiltration, ceramic matrix composites, high temperature materials, materials characterization, piping & instrumentation, PID control, SOP's.
