First Aid Volunteer (Licensed)Various Feb 2004 - PresentMid-Atlantic RegionVolunteer work for various conventions* in the Mid-Atlantic area. I started as a provider (paramedic) in the first aid departments of fandom "party" conventions. I later acquired the administrative work of being the department head for First Aid; and as I advanced my skills and qualifications into nursing, I have brought that broader knowledge into the process of dealing with our more complex patients.First Aid functions as a pop-up clinic operating as a hybrid of Emergency Medical Service and outpatient care for the attendees of the events. A "typical" event starts on a Thursday evening with setup (and caring for other convention staff that are injured or have conditions aggravated during setup), going into shift work coverage responding to reported ill/injured/intoxicated attendees (and staff) either at their location or as walk-ins to the event space that we occupy. The patients are triaged into "assess and release to a sober friend," "assess and advise," "treat and release," "treat and refer to outside resources" (like an urgent care), or "treat and transfer to EMS." This routine of controlled chaos continues into Sunday afternoon, when we break down out equipment and pack it out for the next event. The events may range from small (500-3,000 attendees) to large (23,000+ attendees) and each has their own feel in terms of attendee age, activity choices, and comorbidities.*conventions:2004-2017 - Katsucon (Feb) [2018 onward, working in Emergency Management]2005-2018 - Anime Mid-Atlantic (Jun)2007-2022 - Anime USA (Oct)2012-present - Fur the 'More (Mar)2012-2018 - InterVention (Apr)2014-2019 - ReGeneration Who (Mar)2016-2018 - Potterverse (Jul)2018-present - Balticon (May)2019-present - Blerdcon (Jul)

Emergency Medical TechnicianAllied Medical Ambulance Inc May 1996 - Jan 1999Lower Merion, Pennsylvania, United StatesI worked for Allied just out of college while waiting on my fiancee to complete her degree and find out where we were going to land for her career, and it turned into nearly three years. As an EMT and ambulance driver, I worked on various shifts--though mostly evening and weekend. This company provided the medical taxi style of ambulance service for physician appointments, hospital discharges, etc during normal business hours. In the evening and on weekends, their service still covered the late discharge or return from an appointment, but focused primarily on emergent or urgent calls from contracted facilities or as the contracted backup service to the local primary 911 provider.Duties included direct patient care and documentation, patient lifting and moving (with the old Ferno Model 30 and fully carried stairchairs) into and out of old row house construction, verbal handovers with hospital and nursing facility staff, safe operation in and around the City of Philadelphia, knowledge of major thoroughfares and multiple neighborhoods of the city, light maintenance of equipment, and covering any late/unfinished office work (evenings).
