For his final year individual MEng project, Callum approached me with his own ideas upon return from his industrial placement year and I agreed to supervise his project. It has been a total pleasure to work with Callum over the last year. Callum took ownership of his project right from the start, developing all his own ideas, always seeking opportunities to develop concepts further, demonstrating initiative and creativity throughout, all with dedication and commitment of the highest level. At the end of the project, this was all accomplished with the backdrop of C-19, which has affected us all. As part of the project, Callum not only focussed on electronics and computer control, but also designed and constructed a machine with moving parts and full casing after teaching himself all the necessary skills. His presentation of the final project (search Callum's profile for a video of the Universal Sweet Sorter in action) also considered STEM aspects and how we may use the finished machine in Department events such as open days and UCAS interview days (events that Callum has contributed much to over his time at Nottingham). Callum graduates with a very well deserved 1st Class MEng(Hons) Electronic and Computer Engineering with a Year in Industry degree and has been awarded the Peter Johns Prize, a prize awarded annually by the Department of EEE, in memory of a former Head of Department, to "an outstanding final year student"."
