About C. Randy Giles

In my role as Chief Scientist of the ISS U.S. National Lab, I was responsible for the development and implementation of scientific strategy for the International Space Station. ISS NL experiments in advanced materials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, Earth sensors, communications, smallsats, and many other scientific and engineering disciplines are routinely hosted by the ISS.Prior to my role as Chief Scientist of the ISS NL, I was President of Bell Labs Seoul in Seoul, South Korea. There I established thriving R&D collaborations with industry, academia, and government entities. Research topics included wireless and photonic networks, Future Internet, data center technologies, telematics displays, sensor networks, and data & video analytics. Professional achievements include: -Pioneering of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) by the first demonstrations of EDFAs in optical transmission systems (1988) and developing the industry-adopted amplifier model (1991) utilizing “Giles parameters”. These experiments and models were significant to the global deployment of wavelength-multiplexed optical systems, the core network of the Internet. -Expert in fiber-Bragg grating applications, having first proposed and demonstrated grating-stabilized 980-nm pump lasers and fiber-Bragg grating wavelength add/drop multiplexers (1994). Both applications support billion-dollar scale businesses.-Pioneer in optical networking through the invention and development of the world’s first micromechanical optical crossconnect. This technology radically changes optical networks by enabling new services and better utilization of network assets.-Demonstrated innovative capacity in the development and prototyping of a highly-efficient laser-based microprojector module for mobile devices.Author on more than 100 publications and inventor on more than 50 patents.
