Dr. Mathai retired from Arizona Public Service Company (APS, one of the largest electric power companies in the Southwestern USA), in Phoenix, Arizona, effective January 1, 2013. Over the 28 years at APS, he served in various capacities including the Principal Environmental Scientist and the last ten years as the Manager for Environmental Policy. He lead the company's efforts in influencing national and regional environmental and energy policies and regulations.Dr.Mathai has been an active member of the international professional organization, Air & Waste Management Association (www.awma.org) with over 7,000 members in 65 countries around the world. He served as the AWMA President in 2008. He has also been active in utility industry associations such as the Electric Power Research Institute, the Edison Electric Institute, and WEST Associates (a group of public and private electric companies in the western USA). He served as the President of WEST Associates from 2006-2008.Dr. Mathai has published over 50 professional articles in the area of air quality and global climate change, and edited four books. He holds a US Patent to control airborne dust particles. He was an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences, and served on several Advisory Committees.Dr. Mathai received his Ph. D. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and a Masters from the University of Minnesota. Before joining APS, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Associate at the University of Calgary in Canada, and as a Senior Scientist with an air quality consulting firm in Southern California.
