The DeVoe Moore Center serves as a launchpad for independent student research, being highly malleable to the goals of each intern. On top of writing blogs, I am also planning to extend a project from my coursework into my role at the DMC, with the ambition to display my team’s results at various academic conferences.

As an intern at ERIA, I worked for the Strategy and Partnership program focusing on research. I delved deeply into topics such as Creative Economies and Innovation Ecosystems, and feel as if this opportunity gave me a great survey on current strategies to embolden these markets. Some of ASEAN's critics wonder if Southeast Asian nations have enough in common to cooperate effectively, but it was through my research that I found difference to be an asset. The vastly different circumstances of each nation led to radically different innovative solutions that served as a lesson to all. For example, the Philippines is known to struggle particularly with 'brain drain', where the most educated of its citizenry find better compensation for their skills abroad. In response, the Balik scientist program has been bringing foreigners of Philippine ancestry to 'host institutions' to work for a short, medium, or long term based on their choice. This brings higher skill level employees to the country short term, and can hopefully increase profitability enough to stem the pay issue in the long term. While Vietnam might not have the same brain drain issue, developing a similar scheme for foreign talent of Viet ancestry could positively shape Vietnam's international reputation, especially among diaspora communities. This experience not only informed me, but fundamentally shaped the way I think about differences and cooperation.
