Carlos Augusto Dietrich is a Data Scientist at Modelo Inc. and a Research Scientist in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, with responsibility for the design and development of tools for information visualization and sport data analysis. He received his MS degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, in 2004. During this period, he worked with Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), focusing on the use of GPU’s for medical image visualization. The work with GPU’s resulted on two NVIDIA awards for the second and first places on the first two NVIDIA GPU world programming contests, respectively. He started his PhD in 2004, focusing on the theoretical and practical improvement of one of the most important algorithms on the Computer Graphics, the Marching Cubes algorithm, where he helped to understand why the algorithm performs bad on some situations and how to improve its results. He received his PhD degree cum laude on Computer Graphics, in 2008, and also received a Google award as “the top PhD Student at UFRGS - 2008”, among a group of 85 PhD candidates. After that, he worked from 2008 to 2010 as a Software Development Analyst at Dell Inc., where he had the opportunity to work with the development of software for company’s human resources management. From 2010 to 2011 he joined the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute of University of Utah, working as a Senior Engineer on the development of computational tools for the Oil industry. From June 2011 to October 2015, he and three former colleagues from UofU started Modelo Inc., a New York based UofU spin-off that developed advanced modeling and visualization solutions for Oil industry. From June 2012 to September 2017 he worked for Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), helping to develop the Statcast player tracking system, which is already considered the second revolution on baseball statistics field.
