About Cécilia Gauvin

Cecilia is a passionate and visionary leader who combines her PhD in Mechanical Engineering with her expertise in art conservation and materials science. As the CEO of S-MA-C-H, she oversees the development and implementation of innovative solutions that bring the best of mechanical engineering and climate analysis to museums and cultural heritage institutions. With over 10 years of research experience, Cecilia has led international experimental projects that explore the thermo-hygro-mechanical behaviour of coated wooden panels, using optical and mechanical techniques to analyse deformation and failure patterns. She has published multiple articles in prestigious journals and received several fellowships and awards for her work. She is fluent in French and English,, and has a strong network of collaborators and partners across the globe.

Fluctuation of micro-climate creates deformation into wooden panels. Those panels have multilayer coatings before welcoming an oil-painted image. The successive movement induces fatigue of those layers, leading to cracks and delamination. Cecilia’s task was to understand the initiation and the propagation of cracks into critical interfaces of a multilayer composite by innovative experimental techniques, bringing together interdisciplinary fields: art history and mechanical engineering. This strong connection leads to the quantification of microclimate fluctuation into damage pattern
  • Eindhoven University Of Technology
    Postdoctoral Researcher In Wood Science
Eindhoven University Of Technology Oct 2015 - Sep 2017
    Eindhoven Area, Netherlands
Climate induced damage in decorated oak wooden panels is considered to be a high risk for preeminent susceptible museum collections. Insight in the general condition of the objects was obtained by large-scale surveys of museum collections, supplemented by laboratory-based research, in-situ measurements of museum objects and numerical simulations. Cecilia supervised both the surveys of museum collections and the numerical simulation work. She was responsible for the experimental part. She set multiple international collaborations up, using ultrasounds and optical techniques. She was able to communicate with wide variety of professionals and succeeded to lead and set projects within the milestones
  • University Of Montpellier
Phd Candidate, Hygro-Mechanical Behaviour Of A Wooden Panel
University Of Montpellier Oct 2012 - Sep 2015
    Montpellier Area, France
During her PhD, Cecilia studied the hygro-mechanical behaviour of wooden panels, with an application to the conservation of wooden painted panels from cultural heritage. She set-up of a hygro-mechanical experiment, numerical tools, and she investigated the wood aging process. She also supervised four trainees, and lectured during three years in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Montpellier University. She won multiple grants to set collaborative experiments in Japan, Great Britain, French Guyana. Her PhD was selected for a French thesis competition
