Scales of Resilience: On the physical and biological interactions affecting saltmarsh dynamicsBACKGROUNDResilience is an emergent property of ecosystems, driven by the small-scale interactions between organisms. In an environment heavily influenced by physical forces such as fires, floods and drought, being resilient allows organisms to i. resist perturbation, ii. rapidly recover if that resistance is overcome, and iii. adapt to change through the reorganisation of materials and energy. Understanding mechanisms that determine each facet of resilience is critical for preserving organismal diversity across the globe, especially with the threat of rapid climate change. This PhD aims to apply the framework of resilience theory to describe patterns of change within a model habitat - the salt marsh. The research is structured by spatial and temporal scale relevant to marsh dynamics; "The Creek Bank", "The Salt Marsh-Tidal Flat Interface" and "Regional Dynamics across the UK".

Welsh Language Placement Student

Countryside Council For Wales And Bangor University

Maes-Y-Ffynnon; School Of Ocean Sciences

As the successful candidate of a bursary scheme, I received funding and and access to resources in the Countryside Council for Wales (now known as Natural Resources Wales) with an official title of "Myfyriwr Lleoliad Gwaith Iaith Gymraeg" or Welsh Language Placement Student. This placement was in joint-collaboration with Bangor University, where I was given access to research materials and expertise to successfully complete an Undergraduate Masters course (M-Res equivalent) with the School of Ocean Sciences. The year-long placement consisted of a research project examining saltmarsh soil stability, and assessing how linkages between plant diversity and soil properties act to resist erosion. This work culminated in a literature review and research thesis, for which I was awarded a first-class honours. Collaborations during this project included the Coastal Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Sustainability (CBESS) project; Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH).
